TMJ chiropractic treatment can be a tricky subject. On one hand, these dedicated professionals can provide relief and solutions that otherwise couldn’t be obtained. On the other hand, visits to your local chiropractor can start to drain your bank account – especially if these visits aren’t covered by your insurance. Additionally, sometimes the relief provided will only be temporary.
On our website today, we’d like to give you a first-hand account of what it’s like to visit a TMJ chiropractic treatment specialist. Not only will we examine the positives, but also we’ll explain some of the shortcomings and how additional home remedies will begin to steer you down the path to recovery.
The Chiropractor Will See You Now
While we strongly encourage all sufferers out there to try out our home remedies first, including quick and easy stretches, we understand that sometimes the pain becomes so extreme that you want to see a professional for your TMJ. Chiropractic treatment may also help you identify the central causes of your disorder.
My chiropractor here in Santa Cruz, Ca worked on manual adjustment during my last visit. Sometimes he will feel my jaw joints and have me open and close my mouth a few times. While I’m doing this, he can feel any differences in how the left side of my jaw opens and closes compared to the right side. For me, the left side of my jaw closes after the right side. My chiropractor can then do some techniques to pull my jaw back into alignment. Once completed, my jaw opens and closes in a much smoother manner.
Here’s one TMJ chiropractic treatment technique he does that I’m still trying to fully understand: I lay on my stomach while he checks my feet. He believes that the disorder affects the alignment of my heels. Giving my feet a good once-over helps him understand what he needs to do to correct my jaw.
The Downside of TMJ Chiropractic Treatment
While we encourage you to visit your chiropractor if the pain becomes too intense to bear, there are a few downsides to keep in mind. The biggest is that my relief will only last a day or so. If I happen to clench my teeth while sleeping or have a stressful day then I’m right back where I started. The tension in my muscles pull my bones back out of alignment.
Therefore, staying on a healthy diet and relieving stress through breathing exercises or yoga are all important tools to help you attain relief from your pain.
Bikram Yoga = Is it Just Me or is it Hot in Here?
If TMJ chiropractic treatment isn’t quite enough to help you attain relief from your disorder, then you may want to look into Bikram Yoga. We will be writing up an in-depth post soon about our visits to a local Bikram Yoga studio, but it should be mentioned here that these sessions – when combined with visits to your chiropractor – can provide fantastic relief.
Think of it this way: TMJ chiropractic treatment is for structure and alignment; Bikram Yoga is for muscles and tension relief. Combining the two is a truly amazing way to start attaining relief today.
