What causes jaw pain? This is either a pretty simple or incredibly complicated and painful question to answer. Let’s start with the simple answer then. If you got punched in the face or chomped down much to hard on a jawbreaker candy then that’s what caused your jaw pain. Simple enough, oui?
Discovering the reason for your extreme discomfort isn’t typically this easy, however. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) could very well be what causes jaw pain and has you feeling horrible 24 hours per day. But unless you understand the basics of the disorder and the symptoms, it can be a little tricky to diagnose without expensive and time consuming visits to your doctor.
What Causes Jaw Pain? TMJ Does!
So what is TMJ disorder exactly? In its most simple terms, it’s the habitual inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. This is the joint located on either side of your jaw that enables you to open your mouth, chew, yawn, and all that fun stuff. When the joint becomes inflamed and/or irritated, this is what causes jaw pain.
Maybe your jaw is killing you, but you’re still not entirely sure if you have the disorder. If this is the case, stop and see if you’re currently experience some of the symptoms, including:
- “Clicking” noise coming from the jaw joints
- Inability to open mouth all the way
- Sore cheek muscles
- Bite isn’t correct when teeth come together
- Tongue movements are difficult to control
- Entire face is sore on a daily basis
There are other parts of the body that are telltale signs that you might have TMJ disorder. Maybe you have blurry vision or bloodshot eyes. Perhaps your throat is tight and it’s difficult to swallow. The teeth can become incredibly sensitive by grinding them at night. Even stiffness or partial numbness in the neck and shoulder areas are indicators that you might have the disorder.
